Microdermabrasion is a skin-freshening technique that helps repair facial skin that takes a beating from the sun and the effects of aging. As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation.
Microdermabrasion can also be used on the neck, upper chest/back and the backs of your to improve skin texture and minimize the effects of sun damage. A hand held wand directs a stream of micro crystals and suction hands to gently "polish" your skin and to remove the dead, outer layer of skin giving your complexion a healthy looking glow.
Many a times your doctor will put you on a pretreatment skin program before doing microdermabrasion. Your doctor can also combine this procedure with a chemical peel if your skin condition requires it.
This procedure is done in your doctor's office/ outpatient surgical center. It does not require hospitalization or anaesthesia.
Microdermabrasion treatment: Your doctor will apply the microdermabrasion hand piece to your cleansed facial skin or the part that is being treated, a process that usually takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on the areas being treated. No "after-peel" ointment or covering is required. An initial series of weekly sessions often is recommended, followed by a periodic maintenance treatment.
Although your skin may be slightly pink or sensitive immediately following a microdermabrasion treatment, in most cases you should be able to return immediately to work or social activities.
